Eastern New Mexico
Hi, I am a 'Newbie' I guess you'd say. My family is pretty excited about raising chickens. At this point we have 3, all acquired unwillingly at first. We raised them from chicks, but we really have no idea what they are. There are 2 roosters and a hen. The roosters really match the pictures I have seen of a Sultan, but the hen doesn't exactly. We are also getting a couple of Leghorns soon. My biggest question I guess is, everything I have read about the Sultan is they are not good in cold weather. I am in Eastern New Mexico, and while the average temp in winter ranges between 35 and 45 degrees, it can still get down to about 12 with a wind chill of even lower. Will I need to heat the coup for these guys? We will probably end up with about 6 chickens all together. Would they create enough warmth to get through? I will post some pics of them so you can see what they look like. Thank you in advance for any advice.

I don't know anything about Sultans, but I would be sure to have my coop as draft free as possible. Hopefully this will bump you up and someone with more knowledge will post.

Thank you! I think so to! And very friendly, they love to be cuddled (especially my little girl). I posted on the "what's that breed" thread and it was suggested that 2 were Sultans and the hen a Cochin. They were just given to us as chicks, so I had no idea what they were.

from WI. I would think that they should be fine for an occasional cold night if kept in a dry and draftfree area rooting with oyher chickens. During the day it warms up some I would guess. If they seem too cold you can always place a heatlamp in one area of the coop so they can go there if needed
