Hello! I am new to the BYC family. I am new to chickens as well. I don't currently have any chickens but a neighbor has abandoned about 6 hens and a rooster. Ive been wanting to have some backyard chickens for a while. I have a small farm with 2 old dogs and 2 old horses:) I'm working g slowly to a nice little hobby farm paradise. My husband and I don't have any children so our pets are like our kids. If we rehome these chickens they will become a part of our family. I will try to start a new thread in regards to our plight so I can get some help. So if I interested look meet up. Hope to make some happy chicken memories :)

from West Virginia!! I think it's great you are willing to take in the chickies!! There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here that are more than happy to help a newbie. I am a newbie as well. I have 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 3 Reds. They are my babies. You will get a lot of enjoyment out the chickens! Good luck!!

Thankyou for the greetings! I do really enjoy watching these chickens when they come to visit sometimes so rehoming them with me seems right. Maybe the transition will be easier for them. I have no idea what breeds they are yet. I'll have to do a little research to figure them out. Any recommendations on how to round this little flock up would be helpful. Thanked again.

Hi and :welcome

That's fantastic, good luck! If the chickens have come to visit you before i am sure they will settle in fine. :)
As for rounding them up, do you mean getting them to your garden? You could try luring them with treats, I guess. My chickens will come running whenever they hear the rattle of the food tub approaching.

Anyway, good luck again, I hope everything goes well for you guys.

I buy a small bag of treats from TSC. When my chickies hear the bag rattle, they run as fast as they can to line up single file at the door of the pen. They are so funny! Try to give them some treats and see if they will come to you. If you do it everyday, they will eventually look forward to seeing you and come running when you come outside. It's gotten where my parents walk across the field (on evenings it's not raining) and sit and watch my chickies get ready for bed. They sit and watch them until they get on their roosting spots for the night. There's nothing like country entertainment!!!
