I am completely new to this. Planning to get 4 hens, probably two buff orpingtons and two golden comets. We live in a hilly suburban neighborhood, and had a hard time finding a site for the coop and run, but have found a spot I hope will work on the edge of a small woods in our backyard. It's on a slight slope, under a walnut tree - not ideal maybe, but the best we can do. I will be in charge of cleaning and feeding/watering; my two teenage daughters will be in charge of egg collecting and daily cuddling/entertaining. I am not a gifted woodworker, and helpers may be hard to find during this COVID-19 quarantine, so we're going to learn a lot! I'd love to get chicks this spring, but more likely will spend this entire year building the coop and run so we can get chicks next spring, ha! I'll post my coop plans in the appropriate forum!

Hi and welcome to BYC! We're glad you joined us! If you browse around through the coop pages, you can find lots of great ideas for DIY coops that aren't too expensive or too difficult. But build it bigger than you think you would ever need... because these little guys are addictive. Chicken math. :)

With two teenage DDs to help, the coop build will likely go faster than you think.

I hope you can get the new babies soon!

Here the Tractor store has chick days in the Fall too
