Okay, here goes! I will try to answer the questions the forum listed out that we should try to answer:
VIDEO CLIP: If you can listen to the short video (about 49 seconds), you can hear her wheeze if you turn up your volume and she coughs/sneezes at the 36 second point. She had just come into the coop from outside-they are free range.
*Not sure what type of hens they are.
*They were 1 year old in May of 2012.
*They seem to act, eat, roam the yard fine, just sneezing and what seems to be a little cough or honk type noise.
*They have had this for about 2 weeks and it seems to be getting worse, esp in one of them.
*The other hens, rooster and chicks do not seem to have it. I did hear a couple of them sneeze occasionally, but maybe normal.
*There is no discharge from the eyes or mouth.
*Nothing has happened to them as far as I know.
*I feed egg mash, scratch, oyster and veggie scraps and since I have baby chicks, they also get the chick crumbles as treats.
*These 2 hens have always had bare butts since we got them when they were about 10 months old. We saw the others pecking at them and each other for awhile, then the others pretty much stopped bothering them. I have witnessed the black hens (the ones with the sneezing) pecking and pulling their own feathers out.
*I powder the coop and nests, and floor with 7 dust maybe once every other month. I just dusted today, so you can see it in the video. But I don't think this is not the cause of the wheezing, they have never had a problem with this. I haven't dusted for at least 2 months before today.
*They have fresh water available all over the yard, in coop, and I put a little white vinegar in it as I have read that is helpful for them.
*Not sure how their poop looks, but I haven't noticed any diarrhea or unusual poop around from any of them.
*They are all free range.
*We have no other animals on the farm.
*Bedding: I have a combination of wood chips that we chip with a chipper from various trees and straw for the floor of coop.
*Straw in the nesting boxes.
*I want to do what is best for these two hens before they get worse or spread something to the other hens or chicks.
*All the hens and rooster, and chicks seem very happy, well adjusted and are friendly. They lay extra jumbo eggs consistently.
Thank you for all your help! We are new to this as of March 2012. We have not had any problems yet, and have had 7 babies hatch and have 6 more on the way under a broody hen.
Thank you for any suggestions as to what I should do if anything.
