New at this

His best friend told him this. Of course he hasn't hatched chicks in years and he always kept his in the barn, so I don't know how he would know what it would be like inside, but I would prefer them be inside. As soon as this hatch is over, I'm gonna have him move it inside. I wish he would just go ahead and build my new barn with a chick room:(

The problem with wrapping it in a blanket would be air circulation. Just make sure the vent holes aren't covered.
And my bator does get a bit of an 'off' smell when the chicks start hatching, but it is not strong. I only notice it when I open it. It does not make the whole house smell. Now chicks is a different story!

The vents are in the back and I just draped the blankets so they covered the top and the sides, if that makes sense. This isn't a little bator, it's a pretty good sized homemade one. It's made of ply wood.

I am sitting in my "TV" room which is 10 x 11 ...
due to my geese starting to lay eggs inthe snow last spring, I brught my very old sportsman and 4 styrofoam incubators in here..It was to cold in the garage for incubators.. I hatched out about 400 eggs before It got warm enough outside to move the bators.
I never had an odor problem.. My bride would have let me know is a minute if there would have been..

If your hubbies friend could smell his bator, in a barn, he must have had some really ripe eggs in there..LOL

the hatched shells will give off an odor before they dry up..but not bad...
