Just out of curiosity. Who told your hubby it would smell?

His best friend told him this. Of course he hasn't hatched chicks in years and he always kept his in the barn, so I don't know how he would know what it would be like inside, but I would prefer them be inside. As soon as this hatch is over, I'm gonna have him move it inside. I wish he would just go ahead and build my new barn with a chick room

The problem with wrapping it in a blanket would be air circulation. Just make sure the vent holes aren't covered.
And my bator does get a bit of an 'off' smell when the chicks start hatching, but it is not strong. I only notice it when I open it. It does not make the whole house smell. Now chicks is a different story!

The vents are in the back and I just draped the blankets so they covered the top and the sides, if that makes sense. This isn't a little bator, it's a pretty good sized homemade one. It's made of ply wood.

I am sitting in my "TV" room which is 10 x 11 ...
due to my geese starting to lay eggs inthe snow last spring, I brught my very old sportsman and 4 styrofoam incubators in here..It was to cold in the garage for incubators.. I hatched out about 400 eggs before It got warm enough outside to move the bators.
I never had an odor problem.. My bride would have let me know is a minute if there would have been..

If your hubbies friend could smell his bator, in a barn, he must have had some really ripe eggs in there..LOL

the hatched shells will give off an odor before they dry up..but not bad...
