My husband and I have 6 kids and decided that raising chickens would be so eggciting for them. I think the experience will be wonderful and we are also interested in it for the eggs. I have done a ton of research, but I am finding that some of my six week old pullets have runny poop. Does anyone out there know if this is common? Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much. Chickens can sometimes have runny poop and others have solid. My hens don't always have solid poop, and they are as happy and healthy as can be. I'm sure they'll be just fine. If it doesn't stop within a week, then maybe you can look into giving them an antibiotic.

Thank you for the reassurance! We are getting so attached to these chicks that I would be so sad if I did something wrong.

I completely understand. We are very attached to our girls as well. It's amazing how quickly the love grows isn't it? I never knew we could love a "chicken" so much!...but we do. I think our hens are the some of the most pampered out there! They are all so spoiled and are fortunate enough that they get to free range from dawn till dusk. They also have all kinds of adventures with my kids. You should check out my blog and see how funny they are! They even get to swim in the summer! BTW...I'm the last of 7 kids. I always wanted to have a big family, but due to fertility issues, I really struggled in getting pregnant. My first child is an InVitro miracle and my 2nd child was just an added bonus from God. I'm very grateful for my two.

Before just giving antibiotics, it would be worth trying to find the cause of the diarhea. Are you feeding medicated feed? If not than coccidia is very likely, and does not respond to antibiotics. And birds can get sick very quickly, so it would probably be better to look into it than to wait.
