New Babies Arrived Today!

Thanks for the suggestions....I'll try the yolk and starter in the a.m. She actually really seems to like the yogurt. Not sure how much she/he (LOL) should be getting. I've been bringing it in about every hour and dipping its beak in both the yogurt and water. Then it kind of falls asleep in my hand.

The last feeding, it almost looked as though some of the cloudiness is clearing. It is really strange. I put her on the end of the brooder with the water. She had been kind of bouncing off of things and bumpin her beak on the bottom until she found a sibling. Then it pushed itself into the buddy.

This time she just kind of walked a bit normally without bumping her beak at all. She went right to the group and instead of pushing her head into the other bodies, she kind of made her way in like the others do.

I dont know what to think. I'm just gonna keep trying to get food and water into her and hope to teach her how to eat. It has managed to poop on my daughter a third time too! Named it Peanut, cause it seems to be the runt of the litter and quite frankly is the only one I can tell apart from the others!

Thanks for all the support! I knew I could get some help from this board!

It sounds like she/he is making great progress. Hopefully this is going to be one of the success stories! I hope so. I'm rootin' for ya. Please keep us informed, okay? I wondered earlier today how "the little blind keet" was doing. Glad the outcome seems brighter. Way to go little Peanut!

Just wanted to update....yesterday Peanut was very excited about its water and yogurt (I added the crumbles to the yogurt). It actually seemed to be "looking" for it instead of me forcing it on it.

We went out and got home late last night....the keets brooder is in our mudroom, so it is the first thing we find walking in the door. All of the keets but one was huddled sleeping under their lamp. The other one was on the opposite side in the waterer and feed! It was my Peanut!!!

That is the first time that we saw it venture away from the pack and to see it drinking on its own made me sooo happy.

Not sure if she will survive as a blind guinea, but she/he is definitely a strong little one.

Thank you everybody! I will definitely keep updating this post!

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!

I'm glad to read that you are making progress with her, and if she gets the hang of eating she may just make it. As far as surviving as a blind adult, she will most likely always need to be supervised when not penned... but I've read stories where a mate has chosen a blind bird and protects it, helps it eat, drink, survive... so stay positive!

Congrats on your successful keet nursing to get her this far!

Just thought I would give an update on Peanut...I am happy to say that Peanut seems to be getting around and following its siblings. I just went out and Peanut was happily eating out of the feed dish with the rest of the group. That is the first time I found her eating from the dish and not off the floor.

I'm still prepared for the worst but I'm getting more optimistic as time goes on.

I'll probably post another pic in a couple of days when they are a week old.

This is GREAT news!!! I'm so happy for Peanut, and for you. You have my considerable respect and admiration for your commitment to this little bird.

Just an update....Peanut is still going strong! Still a bit smaller than the rest of the siblings. However, he/she is feathering at the same rate as the rest of them...boy do they look rough. This is my first time with keets and I'm surprised how fast their feathers are coming in.

I do worry about when he/she is old enough to be out with the rest on their own. I'm hoping the rest will look after him/her and protect him. Only time will tell, but for now all is going well!

It would seem to me that if Peanut can see, walk, eat, drink, fly....she has just as good a chance as any other guinea. Do you think s/he can see?

I still dont think Peanut can see completely. The one eye seems to be partially clouded and the other still completely clouded...it isn't a thick covering though, so I don't know if there is limited sight. Hoping for the best though, since we have 16 of them in all, I'm hoping that he/she will remain in the center of the group and try to stay with them. We have a bit to go before that happens....lol only time will tell!
