Good idea! I have a few bags of pea gravel that's large enough to hold the feet up and too large to eat. I will go do that right now! Thanks!
Oh and hey! Thanks to everyone for the congrats and comments on Bandit. The pictures don't do him justice. He is QUITE handsome. I've had several of my neighbors compliment him and said I should take him to the County Fair. Don't know about that! But he's a good boy and protects his flock VERY WELL!

Here's the second hatchling. It's snow white!!!!
So far it's just two. I see two other eggs that have some of the shell coming off. Mama is doing really well and so are the chicks. I gave mama a special treat of oats and vanilla yogurt and a small finger bowl of cottage cheese. She was quite content after that.
This chicks are so funny to watch and so curious! They are very comfortable with me holding them and seem like they just want to play. I am enjoying them. Sunshine (mama) and I have a "different" relationship that I do with the other hens, if that makes any sense. She survived two predator attacks. The first one was "minor" in comparison to the second. She had a puncture wound on her back that was so deep I didn't think would ever heal. Her skin was torn in several places and had a broken leg. I lost several of my chickens in those attacks. It was devestating. But Sunshine obviously healed and she is my love. She spent more time with me than the other chickens, but the flock that remained readily accepted her back without incident. So, I am happy that she has babies and I think that somehow her calmness and love for me (and vise versa) is passed on to the babies.
I'm fixin' to out and check on their food and water and then work in the gardens and greenhouse. I will keep everyone updated! Thanks for the love!
sooo jealous! only have 2 chickens and they are 2 weeks old and i had to turn them daily...
lucky to have a broody hen.
I guess i'll see the full broody experience soon! my neighbors are hatching some of their eggs under a broody and im SO excited. only seen 1 egg hatch in my life (my chick, the other chick hatched while i was sleeping
Hmmm...Went out to check on mama and babies to find them on the ground. My nesting area is approximately 3.5 ft above the ground and I was actually planning on building a different type ladder so the chicks could get down when it was time. So, my first question is, how did they get down? Did mama actually bring them down? Or did they topple out? I don't see how they could topple out because the frame is about 4-5" tall.
Well, I grabbed the little chicks and put them in a hen house closer to the ground and then put mama in. She seemed happy enough. But of course when the other hens and roos heard my voice they all came running because this was the time I check for new eggs, change out the water and refresh food dishes. I turned my back literally for a second and Rocky ran into the hen house and tried to mate with Sunshine. I yanked him out of there because mama was fighting and babies were getting stepped on. This all happened in a matter of a few minutes but seemed like quite a while. Anyway, all is well, and I've closed the coop so mama and babies can do what they want without "threat".
My next questions is, should I put them all back in the original nest? There are still several eggs in there.
