My family has ordered chicks from Mcmurry for at lease 25 years, and not one has been dead when it came.. I was never around or did anythign with the baby chicks when i was younger, but i got my own batch of 25 chicks Monday and all were in great shape, i think ti depends on the heat and shipping birds in this heat can sometimes be bad but to blame it on a hatchery who is known for it wonderful shipping is sad.. 25 is good to keep them warm but 40 in this heat i can maybe see how they got to hot.. its been hot in so many places around the US..
I am so sorry for your lost, call them they will send a replacement or your money back too they are very good about that..
