Just want to run it past you guys.
This chick was hatched today with help. It is day 24. Late hatch. The chick had its leg lodged behind its head preventing it from zipping. It had a vein running over the leg so it bleed a bit when we freed it. She was starting to weaken so we had to intervine.
We took as much shell off as needed to free the foot but have left the rest up to her. She did bleed a bit from the vein but it seems to be drying up now. This is UK time 20.15 and she was hatched about 17.30 after over 7 hrs and then the chirping started to weaken before we decided to act. HAving gotten her half out it was clear she would never have been able to zip like that or free herself to manuver into a zip possition. We have 4 unhatched eggs in with her and no sign of life yet in them and this is Day 24 now.
It has been 3 yrs since we had chicks here and then we had to intervine to save the last two from shrink wrap after all the others died. Those were late hatches 27/28 days. This chick is much stronger than the 28 day hatch bird who grew up a fine rooster. This one is now strong enough to turn onto her belly. She is still attached to the yolk sac but not the membrain now.
As it has been so long since we had babies here please can you post the temps to keep her in the brood box at?? I forget and she may be a lone chick. She is still wet and I intend to keep her int he bator for a good while yet. I know she can stay in there for 3 days. Though need advice what to do for her after that as don;t want to lose her now. She is the only survivor from two tried at hatching and we lost 4 adult hens since Feb so are hoping this one will be ok. This was her a few hours ago. As you can see she is still in her shell and a very big chick filling pretty much all the space. She is now chirping away and moving that leg a lot - I guess glad now it is free.
