What a cute idea! The chicks don't peck it apart?
Not at all!!! BUT yesterday they did figure out that they could jump on its head to get out of the brooder!!!! They went running through the house looking for me, and found my son laying on the living room floor and climbed into his pocket haha

Start introducing them to foods like melons/tomatoes and other low cal. items at a couple of months but don't cut the regular starter until 90 days and then drop back to Maintenance - but only let them have the feed bowl for an hour in the morning and evening. Let them hunt for grass and bugs. The hens can be bred to heritage toms, but some questionable traits might be passed on. Most of the time the long term problems that would appear if these varieties lived past their grow-out/slaughter schedule are of no concern (they're on the table before cardiac/skeletal difficulties reveal themselves).

Some members have apparently kept the Commercial toms alive for 5 yrs, one member said she had a BBB hen for eleven yrs - these are beyond best case lifespans, sad to say. Our brief experience was that they were way too `friendly' and prone to structural `collapse'.

Best of luck. With a bit of effort they'll be plodding around to keep up with you (turkeys just have to know what is going on). for some time.

Well I think we already messed up. We have them on Nutrena Game Bird feed but it is not a starter. The pieces are on the big side (compared to chick crumble) but we just put it in the food processor and get it down to a smaller size. They are getting bigger and their feathers are coming in nicely. They eat it without any problems. It says on the directions that it can be fed to poults till slaughter. Is that the wrong food?

I think we will slaughter these guys and get some heritage birds, maybe the white midgets. I tried looking on the conservatory site for breeders and cannot find any that are selling fertilized eggs, poults or even older birds. We'll probably go with a hatchery because we would prefer to have young (day old) poults. We are not set-up to incubate but then this site is such a wonderful source of enablers ... I mean support that we might throw our hats in that ring soon!

We just want birds that can reproduce on their own and fit our needs for consumption.

So adorable!!! I had a lonely chick and the smallest thing I could fit in her little box was a mini- my little pony horse to cuddle. I had her in a smaller space hoping she would be warmer since it was just her.
