New backyard flock at our Cobourg, Ontario urban mini-farm

Hi HappiHens,

I think it was about three months (very roughly) after they hatched that the farmer who gave us the chicks visited again and showed us how to tell which ones were boys. We felt for the formation of spurs on the backs of their legs. It's a very subtle difference between the males and the females. Both males and females have bumps, but you can tell a male apart by the way his "bump" catches on your finger as you gently stroke the back of his leg — that's the spur.

We ended up with four hens in the end. They're named Tina, Ethel, Pam and Abigail. They have been laying us beautiful little eggs for the last few months, with yolks richer in colour than any eggs I've ever seen! Such a bright yellow, you'd think they were radioactive or something!

Best of luck with your new flock, HappiHens!

And thanks, everyone else, for the warm welcome!

Farmer Paul
