New Barred Plymouth Rock Chick Owner

Hello Carole, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Just FYI, you do not need that heat lamp in addition to the brooder plate. And you should be looking for a much bigger brooder with better ventilation than the tote. They are going to need more space very quickly. It is ideal to have just one warm spot and the rest of the space at ambient temperature with a natural circadian rhythm for a normal activity cycle.

Thank you for your advice on the heat lamp/brooder. And I realized, after looking at an article on growth of chicks (with photos) by the week, that I probably only have about one week to keep them in this tote before it is outgrown and need to start making other arrangements. Thank you for the welcome and I'm glad I joined, too!

I named the two that I can tell apart. Little Beak, because she and her beak are so much smaller than the rest of the chicks. USPS called me this morning at 6:45 to tell me the chicks were here. I rushed to pick them up. After a bit, they had all taken a drink and eaten, except for Little Beak. She was lethargic, just sat there and did not eat or drink, even after I wetted her beak. I thought she might be dying. After about an hour, they had all settled in and fell asleep, for longer than I thought. But when they got up and started doing chick things, Little Beak had perked up and eventually, I saw her drink. The other one I named Hawk, because truthfully, her eyes and beak look bigger and lighter than the others, and she is bigger. Hopefully, the name is not a bad omen. The others, I can't tell apart yet. I like the name Lightning.
Thanks! I named her Lightning as a reference to the song Rainbow in the Dark. She had 4 siblings who died as chicks (because my local feed store sucks. They sold me six sick birds), and one who was eaten by wild animals. She still has Sparkle (an adopted sister from a different feed store, who’s siblings were all eaten by the same dang raccoons who took Lightning’s sister), and they tend to keep to themselves, unless it’s bedtime and they’re roosting with the other birds. I have 22 chickens in total.
