well because of all the talk about the heat in N.C. I look at the out side temp and at 5:30 or 6:00 it was already 74.6deg. so I hunted down the spear water jar to put in with my brooder hen, thing she my need some water. she been setting there on the nest for a long time now. but I went in to the hen house to place the water she was not acting right I mean very protective more so then before so then I saw what was going on with her a baby chick just hatch with a peace of the egg shell on him. now I just have to wait to see how many more she will hatch before she gets off the nest

When I was young there were only mourning doves and I loved to listen to their calls... Now, it is mostly ringnecks (native to India, I believe). They used to release them at weddings(the white ones) and many have gone wild. My mother's yard in the central valley of California had a huge population and they would all nest every spring in her Oleander plants, made a huge mess. Cats would catch a few, but the population is not only stable down here but growing. We did not feed wild birds so they were doing well on their own. I still miss the call of the mourning dove (a native species) which is seldom heard now... They must compete for food and nest areas with these larger birds. In addition, I think there has been some cross breeding between the two species and expect that the mourning dove will eventually be completely assimilated into the ringnecks and gone.
