Our mother goose was killed about a month ago. She had 9 eggs in her nest, so we had to try to hatch them in her memory. We borrowed an incubator (w/o instructions), and we started reading everything we could find on hatching geese. On Monday, our first was born. Then Tues morning, our second started. But it was having a such a hard time...at first, there was a pin hole and a crack in the shell. After 12 hrs, the hole was the size of a pencil eraser. I waited, so afraid of interfering too soon. Another 12 hrs and no progress. I got my tweezers and took off just the smallest bit of shell that I possibly could. The end of the little beak came to the opening. I saw the membrane was glued to the top of his beak, so I gently pulled it up and the little beak came out further. At this point, I put the egg back in the incubator. Around 6 hrs later, the hole was the size of a quarter. But a few hrs after that, no more progress. We were so afraid he was running out of strength. So, we gently broke the shell one little piece at a time. Then we laid the baby and membrane back into the incubator. A few hours later, "Sugar Ray" had freed himself.
I know we're not out of the woods yet, but it's been 24 hours and he's looking great. His older sibling is showing him the ropes.
I love this website!
