I went to my general store yesterday to replenish my monthly supply of Purina Layena. They brought out different bags called Homegrown Layena. I indicated that it was the wrong brand. The sales clerk said it was a new brand by Purina, exactly the same as Purina Layena but cheaper. Since it was cheaper by $1.25 per bag, she thought I would want that. Because I did'nt know anything about it and because I hadn't done any research I had them give me the standard Layena. When I returned home I did a search for the "Homegrown" product and found nothing.

Does anyone know anything about this new "Layena".

Thanks

I have been using HomeGrown for almost a year now. The only difference that I found was the calcium, but I have oyster shells in all my coops incase the hens want them, so that didn't bother me. My hens are laying just fine and they went through a molt, their feathers came in beautiful. HomeGrown here just went up $1.00 a bag and so did Layena. This is just my opinion, I Know others will have something different to say.

They told me at our local feed mill where I get it, that they do make some without animal protien, but what they make in our area has it.

They (purina) told our feed rep that the sun-fresh recipes are geared to the urban chicken keeper who seem to think they're better off feeding an animal-free diet to their birds.

Yup, was all a marketing ploy, not what was best for the birds. I don't feed Purina unless it's the Game Bird Flight Conditioner (grower 19% protein), which does have animal protein.

I can't find the Home Grown online anywhere. I have a bag of Country Acres, but that isn't made by Purina? Anyone have a pic of the bag?

Thanks for all the replys.

I went back to the General Store and talked with the manager. He indicated it was new to his store but Home Grown has been around for a while. The sales clerk thought it was a new product. So the confusion is now cleared up except I still haven't been able to find anything about it on the internet.
