no they are for real and there is nothing technically wrong with them. the theory is that they spend less food on developing feathers than on meat. now, how they can protect themselves from sun (except that they are red) and from predators, is a definite question.

Well, if they are kept in a confined and controlled environment, like most chickens in agriculture, then things like predators, sun, disease, wouldn't really be an issue.
