To candle I use a flash light, go to the bathroom where it's pitch black, and light the flashlight up the egg and try to see something through it. Some are easier to see thru, some more difficult. After day 10 of incubation you should be able to see veins and even movement. You might be able to see veins even earlier, but 10 days it's when it's recommended to check. Just read up on it. And see the pics in the sticky. Once you do it you will know. But you shouldn't be handling and candling the eggs too much.
Chicken eggs take 21 days so on day 18 they go to lock down.
