New Brooder!

I'm getting my chicks in May (first ones) and I was wondering what we will put them in until the coop is built. I'm going to show my hubby this picture. Thanks for posting!

We started in a large rubbermaid tub, then went to a playpen, then the little dusty birds were moved to the garage in the 4x8. They have so much more room now. I have 4 buff orpingtons, 2 barred rocks, 4 golden buff, 2 unidentified chicks, 3 tetra tints and 3 fromm the red pullet bin at tsc

they are 3 1/2 weeks. hope they will stay in there for another 3 weeks. should be much warmer by then

You're welcome! Glad I could help. I think everything cost about 50$ from Home Depot. That was for 2 pieces of plywood, nails, screws, 2 pieces of board (what you see on top holding the wiring down, staples, and a roll of wiring to go on top (the most expensive part). The chicks really seem to love it. Plus I have enough room in there that I can divide it in half for when my new chicks arrive. Then once they're all about the same size I'll remove the divider and let them all play together.

bs288: Sounds like you have a good variety of chicks! I wanted to go 4x8 with mine and my bf gave a bunch of fuss so I settled with a 4x6.

Play pen! What a great idea I def have playpens and they aren't always used every day either ... I've been sitting here trying to think of what I'm gonna do if I hatch more pens than I can house in any of the boxes I have available and what to do if it becomes too shallow.. hadn't thought of a playpen until I read your comment! I don't want to spend a bunch of extra money on this project since I only plan to do it this once, I have my legal limit of layers, just want to give the kids the experience of seeing the babies, etc.
