Good morning folks! I'm Farmer Aaron from southwest Florida.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm kinda new to chickens. I grew up in 4-H so I learned how to raise and care for them. I started a small CSA chicken farm in Washington state for about a year before we moved to Florida to be closer to family. I operated my CSA with 40 shares my first year, raising 3200 cornish cross my first year (not what I had expected!) That was 3 chickens per share per week for 26 weeks (May thru October).

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

0 at the moment. I'm looking around Sarasota & Charlotte Counties for land to lease to run a new pastured poultry operation. Preferably in conjunction with another type of farm operation such as a garden or other live stock.

(3) What breeds do you have?

None at the moment. My favorite meat bird is the Freedom Ranger (although most of my experience is with the Cornish Cross for commercial purposes). For egg laying gals, I do love the Australorps & Easter Eggers (that beard!).

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

My old back yard flock was full of Silkies that a friend gave us after they had a sneaky girl hatch her eggs. My favorite thing is to just sit with them until they get used to me and gently feed them some cracked corn or table scraps.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I love to build things and tinker. I built all of my own chicken houses, brooders, and mobile pasture shelters such as tractors and eggmobiles. I like to garden, I'm dying inside right now because we live in an apartments and my sunlight on the patio isn't amazing. I grow herbs and some tomatoes at the moment.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have two kids, 8 & 15, they love to help with chickens although my youngest detests that we raise some to eat them (even though he loves to each chicken). We have a kitty cat who is our middle child at 12 years old. My wife and I just celebrated our 12th year of marriage. I'm a farmer now, but I came from a 15 year career in IT.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
Found you on the Google! I joined because the resources and community seems pretty great!
