New BYC coop in high desert (apple valley) CA

though the welsummer and marans lay cool eggs IF, BIG IF, they come from proven lines. they may not be the best suit as the lead egg producers in a flock. Think production reds, hatchery grade wyandottes, brown leghorn looks alot like welsummers.

Well, I have learned that keeping chickens is a malleable hobby, and chickens are tenuous at best. I have had a few live and many die. It keeps one in check with how unforgiving nature can be, which is a good thing.

I had a very nice chicken with Merricks disease. Of course the disease is deadly, and it took a turn for the worse one night, and I had to do the deed.

I rebuilt the flock in a very small fashion, sticking with bantam cochens. Oddly, they all found out what sex was in the middle of the winter, and all four my hens sat on eggs in late January. I won't go into detail, as this has NOT been crisis free, and not all chicks are making it.

BUT- a few have, so here is a cutsie video of the day.

I have added some vitamins in their water and keep them stocked on yum yums.
