Hello and welcome to BYC

Roosters are O.K. with layer feed. They eat so little compared to the hens! What you can do in winter is hang a cabbage in the coop for them. It'll give them something to do and provide some healthy snack food as well. As for deworming, I'd suggest 2x a year. I hear Valbazen is excellent. You may find this thread helpful too:

:welcome Welcome, it's so nice to meet you! I'm from NC myself and this year started raising chickens and well...:jumpy chicken math took over and the addiction began! :lau I hope you enjoy it as much as I do here...I have met many wonderful friends and learned SOOOO much from many of the pros. Jump right on in, you will feel right at home in no time! :caf

Well folks, looks like the 'chicken math' you all speak of took over my brain before I even started in earnest. Originally meant to pick up 6 buff orps this morning. But I got impatient and found some other hens for sale yesterday morning. So I am now the proud owner of 4 Ameraucana hens, 5 Buff Orp hens, a Buff Orp Roo and a lavender orp hen (who was just an impulse buy when I went to pick up the buffs this am!) So instead of starting out with just 6, I managed to accumulate 11 right off the bat!! It's a little crowded in the coop for fulltime living, but they'll be happily free ranging in a few days.

My husband and I are originallly from Southern Indiana. We live in KY now, but own a business in Floyd Co. :)
