new Chicens tons of pictures

Thanks for the ideas, I am pretty proud of the second hen. She is the calmest one out of the group. I am to worried about them being pure bred. I am sure they will lay just as good if they are a mix.

Now how long do you all think it will take for the roo's comb to clear up. IT is gradually getting better, but it is slower than I expected. And I havent ever had chickens that were this "ragged" before, and am trying to guess how long it will take before they are fattend up. And the one hen in in the picture with the roo that has the messed up comb. is actually been mine sinc eshe was a chick. She is a BUff orpington. She is my baby, this last fall I had to stitch her back together after a dog ripped her up. I dont know how many of you remember that post. She has been on special care all winter. She is molting, and has had a hard time getting feather grown in around the scars. She is kept in the garage where it is warmer. And when we drop down really cold she has a box in the house that she climbs in and sleeps next to the fire. She has proven to me that chickens actually have some intelligence. She never gets on my carpet and she stays on the linoyiun, or tile around the fire place. And she snuggles down in a box that has straw in the bottom of it. As you can tell she isnt to overly thrilled with the other chickens in her space. This smiley fits her thoughts at that point in time.

#1 is a mix, I think roo
#2 is a Speckled Sussex Hen
#3 is an Ancona Hen
#4 has a young Black bird, she is in such poor health that I cannot tell what she is. The Brown girl in the picture is an EE.
#5 a Black possibly sexlink hen and a mix breed roo, also another black hen t the far left. I cannot see her well enough to venture a guess (probably another sexlink or a mix).
#6 is an EE hen
#7 and #8 , two mix breed roos and a Buff Orp or Rock hen.

It is very nice of you to give these poor babies a good home where they can receive the care they deserve.

So no one has any Idea what feed is the best to get these guys going? I am hoping it wont take very long to get them looking their best, but as I have said I have never had to deal with this type of problem. I am worried that they wont pull through winter. We are down below single digits at night, and the wind out here is aweful. I am thinking I wont see any improvments to thm until early spring, am I right? It takes a long time to re grow messed up feathrs true?

They need higher protein, but they also need carbs to help build energy reserves. This will help them deal with the cold. I would suggest a mixture of broiler or game bird feed with cracked corn and wild
bird seed. As they gain weight and begin to look better you can switch to a regular feed. Again, I admire you for taking them in.

they look like they will be really beautiful once they get proper care.
one question:
being so ragged etc, are you not a little nervous about mixing them in with your own chickens right away? quarantine is always a good idea but maybe especially when previous care was not so great . . . just a thought.

thanks for helping them out - i'm sure they will have a very good life with you and your family.

If you can't find game bird or broiler feed I use unmedicated chick starter for non layers with some probiotics mixed in.

I heard a rumor that if you mix two gold sex-links birds you can end up with buff barring like you see in that first hen. I think several are mixed breeds but all will be looking good in no time. I bet you'll hardly recognize them by this time next year!

I do have the new guys in a whole different pen then my others. The roos comb is clearing up. I went to the feed store and got them layer pellets, chick starter, cracked corn and molasses covered feed. I already habe some bird seed so i didnt have to get any of that. I usaully buy the molasses feed for our chickens as a treat that puts the wieght on them. I have noticed with mine in the past that when I mix the layer pellets with the molasses they seem to have better color in their feathering. They go crazy over it every time i feed it to them, and anymore they expect to get it and act insulted when they dont get it in their ration. Thank you all for your support.
