I had 14 chicks who arrived yesterday. All seemed well but it got pretty hot out today and I am afriad with the heat and their brooder lamp they may have got to hot. Around 4 one had pasty butt so I cleaned and rubbed on mineral oil gently. At 9 the little one seems wek and lethargic and just lying there. Is there anything I can do for this little one?

Did you do the sugar water? (Don't use sugar water for more than a day or so, though.)

Here's the recipe:

the second recipe listed is for super-stressed chicks

Also I'd dip its beak every hour or so to make sure it drinks. Make sure they have room to get away from the recommended heat temperatures. It sounds like you are on top of things now. I have overheated chicks by accident too. They will recover if strong enough.

Sometimes you just lose them in the first few days if they are too weak from shipping, even with the temps just right.

Thanks, and yes I did the sugar water the first 24 hours and now they are drinking electrolyotes. I have them in a deep water trough though it seemed as if they were running around it all day and not panting. I turned off light at the hottest part of the day when they were hanging on the cool side of the brooder. I hope the little one pulls through :(
