new chick has leg/wing issue

she hatched yesterday. all dried out, eating and drinking....but she can't walk right

it's like her legs won't lift her up. she shuffles around. and her one wing stays stretched out, not next to her.

Any idea what could be wrong???????

Those symptoms could be nutritional deficiency or Mareks, both both seem unlikely in a day old.

Maybe spraddle leg?

thats what it is!!

i've done the bandaid thing, hoping it works. it's been 24 hrs since i put the bandaid on her legs....still not helping too much. I'll keep in on there for a couple days and see if there is a change.

There is hope!

I had a chick in a similar state. I am new to raising chickens, but I read everything I could on spraddle leg that BYC had. After some work and a bit of luck she started to improve. I moved her to the triage brooder with another chick. She wasn't able to move as well as her sisters and was getting run over all the time. The two huddled together and lived together while she healed. It's been five weeks. She's a bit smaller than her sisters, but the treatment paid off. She's scrappy and walks like the rest. She moved right back in with her sisters with no problems.

Her legs are too weak to hold her weight, you'll need a way to get the legs exercise.

You might be able to create a harness of out thin cloth, cut a hole for her legs, but not so large that she'll fall though. Then suspend the chick where her legs just touch the ground. Make sure she can reach food and water without moving around (if you leave her suspended). Have her try and walk while most of her weight is supported, then gradually increase the weight. With luck, soon, she'll have the strength to stand.
