New Chick mama from Idaho

I bought a pre-fab coop I'm pretty sure is too small. Do I have enough room in my small backyard? Is Dora really Donald? I bought chicks in late August and now worry about winter. They are already HUGE for their puppy playpen...should I move them to the henhouse outside? Am I raising them right? Will they like me?

Hi, about your questions...

Prefab coops overstate how many chickens can actually live comfortably in them. You have 6 birds, what are your coop dimensions?

A photo of Dora or Donald will help identify gender when the chick is around 5-6 weeks old.

At 2 weeks of age, they should still be receiving some supplemental heat so unless you have a way of providing that in the coop, they shouldn't be put outside yet. If they are too big for the playpen, make a larger brooder for them (maybe 2 really large boxes connected together?).

I'm sure other greeters will have more info for you, hope this helps a bit.

Of course they will like you. As you spend more and more time with them, they will warm up to you. Keep treats to a minimum and save those for when you want to bribe the chicks to eat out of your hand. I use scrambled eggs. They sure love those!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Keeping chickens can seem overwhelming at first. They are so unlike other pets or livestock. However I'm sure they will have you trained up in no time. ;)

Definitely browse our forums, stop by our Learning Center and ask as many questions as needed.
