Thank you very much for the warm welcome. I don't think having them in my spare bedroom would go over well with hubby LOL. He has been great in helping and coming up with ideas to make sure they stay warm. SIL came over yesterday and we cleaned out their big cage and then it dawned on us that it was going to be hard to dry as it has a small opening. But thank goodness we have a neighbor who raises chickens and they lent us a cage until ours dries out, which is sitting on our front porch so that it doesn't get wet from the rain. But then I worried that they were not going to be warm enough so hubby came up with covering 3 sides with a cardboard box and we hung the thermometer in side the cage so that we were getting a better reading. Temp remained between 85 and 87 degrees and my bonus daughter had explained how to figure out if they were getting overheated. Except for the waterer driving me crazy they have done great, just been changing out the waterer out every couple of hours so that they have clean water and hopefully by tomorrow the other cage will be dry and we can put them back in it so that I can hang their new water bottle and feeder. I also got them a perch from Tractor supply that they were playing on until we cleaned the bigger cage out.Your bonus daughter gave you great advice; BYC is a community of smart, generous folks who like to help others on their chicken-raising journey.
You sound like many of us when we first got chicks and spent endless hours worrying about them. You may -- or may not -- get better about that as time goes on. I continue to brood babies in my spare bedroom; having them out in the garage was too stressful for worry wort me.
Hope you are getting the results you wanted/needed from your back surgery. Chicks will certainly keep you busy during any down time.
