Hello everyone, New chicken Mom here. We picked up our day old chicks last week so we have had them for 6 days now. We got 8 egg layers and 20 meat chicks. The layers we have are a Red Sex-Link, a Black Sex-Link, an Azure Blue, an Olive and 4 Leghorns. The meat chicks are White Rock Cornish.
The 4 leghorns are currently mixed in with the meat chicks because at first I thought they had forgotten to add them to my order. But once home and separating the egg layers from the meat chicks, I counted 24 chicks, lol. I called the store cause the chicks all looked the same and they told me to wait a week and the 4 egg layers should be much smaller than the others. Once I figure it out, I will move them to the other brooder with the other egg layers.
We are still in the process of building our chicken coop/run. We live in the country with lots of critters but our Samoyed is good at keeping them away, lol. We have two Samoyeds with our big male sleeping outside 95% of the time, even in winter. We live in Ontario, Canada so we get all the seasons.
I retired a few yrs ago but am still working contracts from home so it makes it easy to look after the chickens. Right now the chicks are in 2 separate brooders in my spare bedroom until we can move them out to the coop.
I found the BYC site while searching about prolapsed vents because one of my chicks (from the 24 chicks) seems to have that and her butt looked like it had been pecked at. I will be heading out to get some Preparation H as I have read it may help and that I need to try to push it back in. I have soaked her butt in warm water and have currently separated her and put her in a box with heat, food & water. She is very small so I think she may be one of the Leghorns.
I am looking forward to learning all I can from this community and seeing my babies grow and start laying eggs!
