Hello all! This is my first time on this site, and my very first post. I've been googling everything about my new flock of chicks and I figured the best way to get good experienced info fast was to join a chicken blog.

I am a wife and mom of 3, oldest daughter age 17, son age 10 and our newest daughter age 9 months.

Last week my husband and I finally decided to start our own little flock of chickens, for many reasons, including we all love animals (We have 4 kitties, all fixed/vetted, 2 dogs one about to be fixed already vetted & rescue that showed up last September, we have 2 Eastern Painted Turtles & one Guinea Pig currently as our second passed away a few months ago at 7 years of age)

We went to the local tractor supply and purchased a chick starter kit, originally we wanted 4 or 5 hens, the least they would sell was 6, well they told me there was only 7 there, I couldn't leave one alone so agreed to take the 7th. At checkout we realized they'd given us 8! So now we're the proud owners and parents of 8 olive egger chicks (I believe that's not a breed but a mix between blue egg layers and brown egg layers) about 2 weeks old. My husband is building their coop.

We've had them about 4 days, originally I started them on purina crumble and ordered them a different kind (can't remember the name ) and started them on that today. Also ordered them sav a chick electrolytes for water and some chick grit. They have a red light and are in a tub inside a dog crate we had with their group feeder and a waterer.
One of the chicks started not wanting to walk around it just kind of lays in nesting position. As second one started doing that today also. I separated them in a smaller container under the light also with their own food and water. They are still eating and drinking. Checked their butts for pasty butt and their fine. They don't seem injured more lethargic. I may post about this on another thread but I'm just introducing myself and why I'm here. Wanna be a good chick momma!

Thanks and nice to meet everyone. B

Adios

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. This is a great place to hang out.
Try dipping beaks in the sac a chick water make sure all get some.
Second with hubby doing the coop he needs hardware cloth not chicken wire please there are heat tables available will not start a fire.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Please post a picture of your entire brooder setup. Are the chicks too hot? I would not wait for an order of chick electrolytes to come in. I would make a batch of magic water and start them on it right now.

:welcome

Hello, hope your chicks will be fine. Do you have a thermometer in their brooder? You don't want it above 90-95* in one area and cooler in another so they can move in or out of the warmth.
Note: you'll want that heat to drop about 5* per week as the chicks get older
