Hi all -

Just became a chick mommy yesterday to 8 4-5 day old Rhode Island Reds. I'm guessing age based on some pictures I've seen. Very excited and nervous. We've never had any farm animals, so this is all very new. Happy to see that there is site like this, where I can get some help when needed. Any tips for newbies would be appreciated! :)

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on your new RIR chicks :celebrate Raising chicks is very exciting, rewarding and lots of fun too. Nerve wracking also as they are so small and fragile looking too. Try not to be too nervous though and enjoy the experience, everyone here can help with any questions or concerns you may have.

The learning centre has some great articles on raising chicks here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck with those lovely new babies and enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC and congratulations on your first chicks. If you have any housepets, etc. please make sure to have a wire cover over the brooder to prevent their access. If will also keep them from flying out of the brooder and being unable to find their way back.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Definitely check out our Learning Center link that Yorkshire coop has left with you. There is loads of useful information there that will keep you from making beginners' mistakes. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.

Glad you could join our community. Congratulations on your new chicks! The Rhode Island Red is a nice breed of chicken that I'm sure you'll enjoy. I've kept a Rhode Island Red hen for the past four years and she's been an excellent layer with a good temperament, too.

Good luck with your chicks! Feel free to ask any questions you may have. Raising baby chicks is such an exciting time!

Hey, I am glad to hear you say you are nervous! I am a grandma to a beautiful rambunctious toddler, but these chicks are making me more nervous than she did. I just got six Asian Blue chicks yesterday!
