New Chick needs "HELP"

Getting my first coop and I'm wondering where to place it in my backyard. I live in NW Florida we get a little cold weather but mostly I'm worried about the heat and humidity. I have exit door on 1 gable end window on 1 gable end and nest boxes on 1 side. 1 side is completely closed my backyard faces south and I have little to no shade. Any suggestion welcomed. I could place another window on empty side I will be adding a run as well that area will be covered. I'm just worried they will cook in the coop. also didn't know if nest boxes would be undesirable if they got too hot.

! Great to have you in our community! You are correct - the heat will be more of an issue than the cold. When the heat is oppressive they will go where they feel the most comfortable. I think as long as your run has some shade and access to a breeze, they will be fine. Cool fresh water is important on those hot days as well. Having windows in the coop for a cross draft is a great idea, too Good luck to you!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Providing shade and ventilation are going to be crucial. A shaded run, or elevated coop that they can gen underneath in the heat, may be options. Some people put a fan in the coop for better ventilation and a breeze. Visit the Florida thread, there will be lots of people there with heat and humidity experience.

Welcome Moma Chick. My coop is in the shade. It wasn't my first choice for spot...but DH actually came up with the new spot and I think we're better off because of the shade business. I also combatted the record heat temps last summer with frozen water bottles (no cap needed) right in my waterers. They were slow to thaw and kept my chickens core temps down.
