I have lived on a small farm in the SF Bay area for a long time, but my focus has been horses. With fewer horses, we finally decided to convert two areas in our barn into chicken coops, and we now have eight laying hens. I'm having so much fun with them, and feel lucky that from the eight hens, we are getting six to eight eggs a day. I look forward to using this forum for my questions and issues as they arise.

Hello, welcome to Backyard Chickens! :woot Congratulations for becoming part of the flock!
Pictures of your new flock would be nice!:popWhat breeds did you get?
I got five Buff Orpingtons that were about six months old, and three weeks later I got three Light Brahmas, about eight months old. The hens get along fairly well, although they still roost in separate areas.

Welcome :welcome and congrats on your chickens! I'd keep your eyes peeled to make sure they get along well even if they seem to now. You never know.
How are buffs? I'd like to try those out sometime.

They have been together about a month, and nobody is violent or particularly aggressive.

The Buffs are such nice hens. They were hand raised by a woman and her kids, and they are very friendly. They come when they are called and don't mind being handled. They are super layers, and consistently give me five eggs a day.
