I agree with what @DobieLover said! I just read a thread earlier that raccoons are pretty savvy with gate latches. I hope you can find a solution that works for you.

BTW raccoons can open any latch, they have opposable thumbs. They are cunning and patient and very smart. Given enough time I think they could even work out combination locks -

I bet Raccoons could even type on a keyboard, so watch out for predator behavior here on BYC.

Welcome to BYC! So sorry about your chicks. Maybe spend some time reading up on predator proofing your coop and run so when you get some layers they will be safe.
