Well, I'm tired of reinventing the wheel, so I've come here to figure out how to do this backyard chicken thing.
Earlier this year, we asked the city council of our sleepy, little, Central Iowa town if we could get a few layers.
They said yes, so here we are.
We hope to get heaps of tasty eggs and to teach our children the value of animal husbandry (or something like that).
I have a feeling that all the answers are in here somewhere... I just need to find them...
Thanks in advance!
Scott

(The chicks are about 10 weeks old now, the middle of July, 2014, a LOT bigger now!)

from Washington! In our flock we have great people and it is always great to have a new member:) In our flock, we have no pecking order!

By the way, not saying that you will do anything bad, but no fowl play

What an adorable pic!! Thanks for sharing that! Definitely stop by our learning center for lots of great tips and hints on raising your new birds.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Thanks All!
I will check out that learning center.
I guess the question is... Everything?

I built a little coop and a little run but I feel like its all cobbled together.
I'm interested is seeing what others have done in a small backyard type operation.
Thanks again,
Scott

Great pic of you and your child. We are raising our chickens and making it a learning experience for the kids from raising the chicks to building the coop. It's great fun.
Welcome to BYC.
