Hey everyone, I'm a first time chicken owner in the Twin Cities suburbs. Between being an animal lover, concerns about the economy and supply chain, and wanting to get a little closer to my family's food source, we decided to take the leap.

We were looking for cold weather girls to survive our freezing winter, so we started out by ordering three Dark Brahmas and three Buff Orpingtons from the hatchery. I learned later that they include extras "just in case" so now we have eight 3-week old chicks.

I've already gotten a lot of great info from this site, and looking forward to learning a lot more about being a great chicken owner.

The first time I ordered chicks, I thought that I'd make mistakes and half of them would probably die before adulthood. I hoped to have 12-15 hens, and I planned to butcher most of the cockerels, so I ordered 50. *** FIFTY ***. Guess what? I lost only ONE, and the hatchery had sent 6 extra.
Years later, we find that's a great size flock for us to manage, and be able to sell plenty of eggs. The girls pay for their own feed and supplies. :)

I've been paranoid, like a first time parent, worried I might do something wrong. I guess it's been healthy paranoia, because all eight are doing great. One is a bit of a runt and behind the others in terms of feathers and size, but he's doing well. Now to get them ready to move outside in a couple of weeks...
