New chicken keeper in Texas

Hi! Welcome!

Both of your breeds are fairly heat tolerant. If you fall victim to "chicken math" you might enjoy Delewares and Australorps as well. Both very heat tolerant good layers.

Here's a thread page you might enjoy, some ingenious ideas for keeping chickens cool and comfortable. https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=Extreme+heat
Also, if you'd like to connect with some neighbors, https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=Texas
Best of luck with your flock!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me).) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in keeping your flock cool.

Glad you joined us at Backyard chickens. I don't think you are over reacting - heat kills fast, better to be safe than sorry.
