New chicken lovers

Hello, Styler, and welcome to BYC! :frowGlad you joined.
What area of the world are you in? You may want to update your profile with that information so that it will show when you post.
Your environment and what you are looking for in a chicken will influence what breed(s) would be best for you to consider.

Well aren't you the lucky guys to already have a coop! Inspect it and make sure it's up to the predators and weather your flock will experience. You want LOTS of ventilation and a generous roof overhang. I always recommend digging in hardware cloth or providing a deep dig-proof apron around your run. Also latches that can be reinforced by carabiner clips. Decide if you'll need electricity for things like improving Winter egg-laying, automatic doors, electric fencing and/or freeze-proof waterers. Then you can provide an electric line or solar panels as you see fit.

Next get yourself some chicks and get ready to fall in love! I used a hatchery until I "accidentally" ended up with a roo (who gave me chicks at exactly the time a quarantine prevented my being able to get any new chicks!). I've had excellent results from My Pet Chicken where they treat every customer as a unique human being instead of an income source and do a fantastic job of communicating and guaranteeing their deliveries.

They have filters that will help you make selections based on your climate, the appearance and rarity of birds and even egg colors. Other hatcheries do as well. And, of course, they will send you a mixed (straight run) flock, females or males as you prefer.

Welcome to BYC and to the fun of chicken keeping!
