at work to test air flow from a vent, we would tape a skinny ribbon, paper or something light that the air could move

Ok so I need to put a tissue on a yard stick and make sure it's moving

Flagging tape tacked to the ceiling in front of vent then observed thru a window will show the air movement. Determining if what you see is too much is highly subjective.
Hanging one over the roost would be good too, but hard to keep the birds from messing with it.
