New Chicken Man

The Amazon coop really was kind of flimsy. I spent an entire day strengthening, re-enforcing weak spots, double screening windows and mounting the entire unit on treated lumber. It is 100% better now and really solid. It definitely would not have lasted long as it was, maybe a couple years. We will see how it goes. It was recommended for 3-4 chickens but 3 is the max. Some year I may get ambitious and build a larger deluxe coop now that I am learning more about it. I will start scrounging materials now so I will be ready when the time comes.
So true! Awesome job fixing it up! I don't think there's a prefab coop around that isn't crummy quality... I had to make the same tweaks plus add some ventilation (not shown here) and hw cloth apron around the perimeter..

And it barely lasted 2 years. What I should have done was painted on some weather proofer both inside & out and add a gutter... we get quite a bit of rain here. Oh well, it was a good start to find out if chickens were my thing... and as it turns out... they are! Now they have a much bigger home! I can see you're already on the same path :lau

FIRST OF ALL WELCOME....GLAD TO HAVE YOU JOIN US. YOUR IN FOR A MASSIVE INTERESTING TIME READING AND LOOKING UP PICTURES OF WONDERFUL CHICKS. I, MYSELF HAVE A MIXED FLOCK, SOME OF THE MOST CRAZIEST CHICKS BUT I LOVE THEM ALL THE SAME.

I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND PREFAB COOPS ARE A WASTE OF MONEY. MY HUSBAND AND I ACTUALLY BUILT OUR TWO. AND HIS MOTTO IS GO BIG OR GO HOME. WE ACTUALLY REPURPOSED OLD WOODEN SHIPPING PALLETS AND JUNK 2X4s. DIDNT HAVE TO GO AND BUY TOO MUCH MATERIALS I THINK TOTAL WITH BOTH COOPS SET TO HOLD 15-20 CHICKS A PIECE....MIGHT HAVE BEEN 225 IN MATERIALS WITH THE REPURPOSED STUFF. MOST EXPENSIVE ON OUR PART WAS THE CHICKEN WIRE. AND THE SAND WE USED UNDER THE POULT COOP. OH DID I FAIL TO MENTION THAT PRICE WAS INCLUDING A DOG FENCE WE BOUGHT FROM CRAIGSLIST. IT WORKED AMAZING TILL THEY GOT BIGGER. THEY ARE A JOY SO CONGRATS ON YOUR EDITIONS.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya

Not sure what part of the world you're in, but 1 sq ft of draft free ventilation is recommend per bird to avoid frost bite. Also flat 2x4s make the best roosts so they can keep their toes warm.

We do live within the city limits so I am only going to have three chickens max. For me this is going to be cheap hobby. After I fixed all the weak points, I don't see why the coop I have should not last for years. It has mostly just become a place for them to eat and sleep since they spend most of the day wandering around the yard. I want to keep things simple.
