Hi all, I’m new to being a chick momma. I have 10 Silkie chicks, 4 that are 3 weeks old and 6 that are 2weeks old. We are building the coop for the babies and hope we have researched and read enough to build them a fantastic home. I decided to join this forum because everyone is so knowledgeable and nice and I have a ton of questions.

Thanks so much! May I as you a question? I have 4 Silkie chicks that I got when they were a week old and are now 3 weeks old, and 6 that I got when they were a few days old and are now 2 weeks old. The 4 older ones I held every day on my lap but are still skittish with me and run the other way when I try to pet them. The younger ones are much calmer and two out of the six come to me to have me pet them. I’m very confused as to why the older ones are skittish when I have handled them more and the youngins are not. Any opinions or help as to why this is?

Many chicks go through phases where they become more skittish for a bit. Just like many little humans go through a phase of not wanting anyone but mom or dad for a while. I found that any of the little ones that became skittish growing up became more social as they matured a bit and bribing them with treats always helps :) Sometimes an individual will not be a friendly ‘pet’....
