Hello! 👋 My name is Sarah and this is the first year I’ve had chickens. My partner has kept many breeds of chickens over the years so he has tons of great experience.

We got 13 five week old RIRs a month ago and they have been so much fun. I also picked up 6 day old Icies a week and a half ago and they are growing beautifully.

I’ll add some photos of everyone:

1. A couple of hens

2. Not the best photo of our Roo Hermes but he is my absolute favourite - he’s so sweet and has really taken to me.

Sadly we lost two hens to a fox attack today - still feeling pretty sick about it. One of them was my favourite hen - I’ve been doing some improvement planning to prevent it from happening again.

Caring for chickens has brought me so much unexpected joy but gosh does it ever hurt the heart when something happens to them.

Hello, and welcome! Sorry that you lost those couple of girl's. It's better to build thing's stronger than you think that you will need. Good luck with the rest of your flock!
Thanks! Unfortunately it happened while they were free ranging right in front of the house - I made it out the door in time to see it carrying a hen away.

It’s definitely made me not want to free range them anymore which is a shame because it makes them so happy. Instead I’ll be focusing on expanding their run and make sure no intruders can get in.

Expanding the run will help, and put a cover over it too, so that the hawk's can't just fly in there and grab one also.

Agree with BlueBaby. Everything loves to eat chicken, it can be a full time job preventing that. There are also predators that will dig under your fencing to get your birds. Some folks like to lay poultry wire down in the run area and cover that with gravel or mulch, or whatever you choose to lessen the chance of other preds grabbing a fast meal.
