I think some of the more important things is a Ft.knox of a coop and run. Keeping predators at bay will do much to promote health and longevity of your birds as well as reducing anxiety on your part.
Keep on eye on your birds to notice when their behavior deviates from their norm. Be sure they are up on worming (if needed) as well as treatment for mites/lice. Provide fresh, clean, feed in this case probably layer. Damp food can become moldy fast and kill chickens.

Coop should be draft free, yet have necessary ventilation, they rarely need a heat source. The how tos and what fors are all to be found in the various threads.

Okay thank you that was helpful! my run has a high enough fence but I'm debating if I should put netting over the top, also should i lock the chickens up in the coop at night?
