New chicken owner from PA

Welcome! I've got 2 brothers in NW PA! I saw a pic on the game cam thread of a bear trying to get in a coop so I guess bears do like chickens! (the bear was unable to get in). Post replies to all who reply to you and that will get your numbers up so you can post pics!

Thank you for the info. We had a bear visit us last week. There was a bucket of apples in the driveway and the bear got into it. We've had bears here before, usually they come at night and forage for something to eat - then then leave. We don't keep garbage out, but they like bird seed that falls from our bird feeders. I'm planning to shut my chickens up inside the coop at night until I have a secure run in place. I don't think a bear would bother trying to get in my chicken coop, it would be very difficult. I plan to put a motion light on the outside of the coop so I can see critters that come around there at night. Maybe we'll put our deer cam out there too. Might make for some interesting pics for the BYC forum.

Hello, and welcome from McKean County, PA! Are you nearby? I am tired of this cold, wet weather we are having. My coop is a mess... the area around it is all mud, and the sand run is all wet and gross! I asked DH for a roof for my run... and he gave me an evil stare!

I live in central Pa, I'm not originally from here so I don't know where McKean County is. I'm on the Blair/Cambria Co. line. Yes, I'm ready for some sunshine! Sick of rain. But the fall colors are gorgeous right now.

We are definitely putting a roof on our run.....we get a lot of snow up here and I'm hoping by putting a roof over the run it will save us from having to shovel/snow-blow an area for the chickens to range in the winter.
