New chicken owner in Philadelphia area

Yay! I think they are both girls then - both combs look the some, smallish and more pink than bright red. Here are the 2 of them:

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

You picked some fine breeds! By 5 months of age, the bird will have a big ol bright red comb on the Australorp. Hens would still be pale yet. Aussie hens don't mature up till after 6 months of age. But an Aussie Roo would definitely look like a big roo. As @sourland has mentioned, lots of long hackle and saddle feathers by now as well.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours! :)

pics!! Those are some of the breeds I chose as my first flock! I'm a newbie too, will be getting my chicks in April from Meyer Hatchery.

Here are a few more pictures of the girls :love At least I think they are all girls

They are so handsome!

I actually would like a rooster, but I can't keep roosters where I live, so I'm relieved that it appears mine are girls.
Hello Catherine :frow and welcome to BYC :wee!! I have had the expirence of getting 2 australorp cockrels instead of hens. They were crowing at 4 weeks, both of them. Here is a pic.
