New chicken owner

View attachment 1143941 Hey guys I just got a bantam rooster, and I'm a newbie to owning a chicken. I was wondering if anyone could suggest what type of diet I should feed him, he's gonna be a indoor chicken. I also got him a good size dog crate with paper bedding, should this be sutable housing for him? I was also wondering if there's anyway to check to make sure he doesn't have any kind of bugs, lice, or mites on him, as I'm sure the farmer I'm buying him from has kept him outside. Also the cage in the picture isn't the one I got him, the I have is much nicer lol.

Cage in the picture is fine, if you have a larger one see about putting a roost/perch for him. As for lice/mites, look under at the base of his feathers, more so under the wing, base of the tail, vent areas....There is DE or Poultry Dust that can be used, make him a dust bath with some wood ash & peat moss sprinkled with DE. As for feeding, Flock Raiser or an All Purpose would be fine, remember the grit in a side dish.

Do you know where I could buy the poultry dust and wood ash?

I use ash from from my fireplace and lump coal ashes from the smoker.

Poultry dust at the feed store or Garden & Poultry Dust at Walmart (cheaper for me here) The main ingredient is Permethrin...
