I’m a new chicken owner as well as new to living on a farm. We’ve lived on our farm for a couple months now and just got 1 rooster and 4 hens, I’m very surprised how much I’m actually enjoying my new additions. Not only do I have chickens but I’ve got 3 dogs as well. We are adjusting very well. We want our chickens to be free range and I’m curious in finding out how people introduce them to the freedom.

Congrats on your new farm life and chickens!

Once your chickens know where their 'home' is (the coop), they will return to it. Some people will keep their birds shut up in the coop for several days (with food and water of course) to imprint that sense of home on them. I just kept my birds in their enclosed run, with the coop door open, for about a month and they figured out on their own where their coop and nesting boxes were.

To encourage them to return to the run/coop when I wanted them to, I'd shake a can of sunflower seeds. They'd all come running to get that treat, then it was just a matter of closing the door behind them.

Best of luck to you with your new flock!

Hi, Welcome. There are so many caring, helpful people here. I'm sure many will have some great answers for you. I can't free range mine, wish I could. They have a large run. I wish you all the best with your new farm. We have dogs and chickens too! Will your dogs let you free range with out attacking them? 2 of mine would but 1 he wants to attack them all the time.
