hi there.
I’m getting my first flock in the spring and I’m trying to learn as much as i can! I have 3 dogs and one cat already. All are well trained but we will go slow with introductions. I have two daughters (9 and 11). They are super excited. They want silkies but I’m a little worried about the cat! Should this be a concern once they are full size?

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. I've never kept silkies, so I'm not sure about how they would do with your cats.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - Find Your State Thread

All the best

Welcome! I have 2 cats, and they get along fine with the chickens. The chickens like one of my cats better than the other one, but neither cat will hurt the chickens, and the chickens aren't intimidated by either cat.

Silkies are generally the first victims of predation. Their crests and beards obscure their vision so they aren't as alert to predators as other breeds. Also their fluffy feathering on wings does not lend itself to good flight. Silkies can jump high but, usually do little to no flying. They are adorable pets for kids and can make fantastic broody mothers but, are not good layers either.
