New Chicken Owner

Thank You for the great advice. The wire is to keep out predators it is very small squares, then put down some weed barrier cloth and 1 -2" of sand on top of weed barrier. Suppose to be better for their feet cleaning and hygiene, and grit. You then can take a kitty litter scoop for the Poop lo,l much easier than sifting through straw or wood chips to clean!!!
Thanks for great links I'll be studying them today for ideas and insight. Chicks made through first nigh 4 chicks to start 4 bouncy happy chicks this morning YAY!!!!!!

Grand kids excited even my wife who said I don't want any #$&* chickens. Last night caught her talking to them she even named the 4 th one lol.
Thanks Again For All Advice and Links.
Oh you're welcome! I love learning about chickens and sharing ideas. Sounds like the wire you have IS hardware cloth... best protection from predators. I also use sand in part of my run area, yes very easy to scoop. But I prefer Sweet PDZ under the roosts as it dries poo even quicker and smells fresher. You can see what I'm talking about in my coop article, though it's mostly about my building process (and very long, sorry) but there may be some helpful tidbits along the way!

Sounds like your chicks are doing great... they're alive!! I was always so worried about mine and kept checking through the night. My husband wasn't too crazy about getting chickens either. Now he thinks they're pretty entertaining and appreciates their individual quirky personalities. It'll be fun for your grandkids too, to watch them grow. We had a barred rock that was particularly friendly and often joined my daughter in her playhouse.

If you're interested in more links I have a never ending supply! You might want think about adding leg bands to your chicks before their feathers change and you can't tell them apart... since you named them all, maybe it would help.
Teaching your chicks to come when called is fun and actually useful when you need them back inside etc.
And this is a favorite page where I can find almost any article about all types of chick and chicken care. Happy Reading!!!
