New Chicken Owner

Hello, Kathleen and Russ, welcome to Backyard Chickens! :woot Congratulations for becoming part of the flock! Patience is probably the hardest part of chicken taming, imo. Try to get them to eat from your hand first, then you can try petting them and picking them up gently. If they are impossible to catch even though they are friendly, you can grab them fast then gently touch them and feed them.

If you sit on the ground and toss some meal worms around you- they will creep up and eventually get near you. Don't try to catch or touch them. If that goes well you can have meal worms in your outstretched hand. If they get brave enough to take them, they will begin to associate you with treats. Soon they will be running to you, and will forget you could be a big, scary predator.

As for me, you couldn't pay me enough to have meal worms in my hand. They also sell dried ones but, the moving ones are more enticing.
